Initially performed for the Yes All Women art benefit and auction hosted by Rose McGowan and curated by Jessie Askinazi in Los Angeles, and with the video debuted for a limited run on Art 21, and shown in Speedshow curated by Aram Bartholl, Durbin’s The Supreme Gentleman (2015-2016) is an exorcism of Isla Vista shooter and “incel” Elliot Rodger's final Youtube address, "Elliot Rodger's Retribution," which he uploaded before going on his shooting rampage. Throughout the piece, as Durbin performs Rodger’s words, her voice shifts from a pubescent, squeaky “Mickey Mouse” voice to a deep guttural demon voice, a purging of toxic masculinity and the Internet, the viral nature of mass shootings, and the way social media/online forums contribute to the single person shooter phenomenon.
